Carburization Reaction Kinetics

The time-dependent absorption and diffusion of carbon at the metal surface, governed by the chemical potential of the surrounding atmosphere.

Carburization occurs when carbon from the environment diffuses into the hot surface of the workpiece. This often happens during welding when the shielding gas coverage is not clean or the flame is set too rich. The effect makes the edge zone hard and brittle, which can later lead to cracks in the weld. Therefore, pay attention to a clean surface and proper gas coverage, then the carbon content stays in the lot. If the material is still carburized, often the only help is to grind the area or stress-relief anneal.
