Reactive cored wire

Reactive cored wire contains additional elements that react exothermically during arc welding and increase the deposition rate. This speeds up welding and improves weld quality.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Reactive flux-cored wire contains additives like silicon or potassium that react with the weld pool during arc welding. These react exothermically and release energy, which raises the temperature in the weld pool and improves deposition rate.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

The higher deposition rate speeds up welding, which boosts productivity. However, too much reactivity can cause an uncontrolled temperature rise in the weld pool, leading to porosity and poorer mechanical properties of the weld. Also, the exothermic reaction can increase fire risk in the shop.

Shop practice & action items

Use reactive flux-cored wire only for special jobs where fast deposition is needed. Make sure the welding machine and protective gear are suitable for the operator to avoid fire hazards. Keep an eye on the weld pool temperature and adjust as needed to avoid porosity.
