Reflection Ultrasonic Testing
Reflection ultrasonic testing uses ultrasonic waves to detect defects in metals. The signal is reflected at acoustic impedance discontinuities and evaluated.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Ultrasonic waves are propagated through the workpiece and reflected at interfaces between different materials or within the material. These reflections are recorded as ultrasonic signals.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Reflection ultrasonic testing is especially suitable for checking weld quality and cracks. Defects such as pores, cracks, or uneven welds can be identified through strong reflections. Incorrect use can lead to false results, which poses risks to the safety of the workpiece.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use a high-quality ultrasonic device with a suitable transducer. Make sure the workpiece is clean and dry. Select the correct transducer frequency (usually 2.5 MHz for metals). Move the transducer slowly over the area to be tested and watch for strong or irregular reflections. Document all results carefully.
