Friction Stir Spot Welding
A variant of friction stir welding where a rotating pin plunges locally into overlapping sheets to create a metallurgical bond via plastic deformation. It operates without a melting phase and filler material.
A rotating pin is pressed into the overlapping sheets and stirs the material. The friction heat and pressure plastically deform and mix the metal without melting it. This creates a solid-state joint without filler material. The process is well suited for sheets of different materials because the structure is not altered by a melt. If you choose the pin wrong, spin too fast, or apply too little pressure, the joint will be poor or cracks will form. So make sure the material is clean and use a steady, even feed.
