Friction Time

Friction time is the duration during which parts rotate against each other under pressure to generate friction heat. It determines the plasticized material at the interface.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

The friction time is the time in which two metal parts rotate against each other under pressure. This process generates heat through mechanical friction and plasticizes the material at the interface.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Too short a friction time can mean not enough material is plasticized, which leads to an insufficient joint and possible cracks. Too long a friction time raises the likelihood of pore formation and coarsens the structure, which reduces the toughness of the material.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

The optimal friction time varies with the material and welding process. For steel with a diameter of 10 mm, the typical friction time is about 30 seconds at 200 rpm. It is important to control the friction time precisely to ensure a homogeneous joint and the best toughness.
