Remanence Magnetic Testing
Residual magnetism testing uses the remaining magnetic field in components after the current is switched off to detect cracks or material defects. It is a portable method without a permanent electric field.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
After applying a magnetic field, the material remains magnetized (residual magnetization). This property can be used to inspect the structure and integrity of the material.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Residual magnetization can be affected by welding processes. Cracks or changes in the material can alter the magnetic field, which becomes visible during inspection. Improper handling during welding can lead to inaccurate results.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Before performing the residual magnetization test, the material must be safely and completely cooled. The test should be conducted in a quiet environment to minimize external magnetic fields. If cracks or material changes are suspected, additional test methods such as ultrasonic should be used.
