Resonance Ultrasonic Testing
Resonance ultrasonic testing is an NDT method that uses standing waves in components to measure material properties or coating thickness. It determines elastic moduli and detects surface flaws.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Resonance ultrasonic testing uses ultrasonic waves that reflect inside a component. These waves form standing waves whose frequency and amplitude are affected at material boundaries. The specific resonance frequency gives information about the material's elasticity and density.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
This test is especially useful for characterizing weld zones. It can detect cracks, inhomogeneities, or deformations in the near-surface areas that are not visible with other NDT methods. Misinterpretation can lead to missed defects and thus a safety risk.
Shop Practice & Action Instructions
Proper resonance ultrasonic testing requires special ultrasonic equipment. The components must be precisely aligned and the wave direction accurately determined. Measurements should be taken in a defined frequency range and compared with reference data. Correct interpretation of the results requires in-depth knowledge of metallurgy and NDT.
