Retained Austenite Stabilization
The enrichment of austenite with carbon and alloying elements, allowing it to remain metastable at room temperature.
Retained austenite is normal in some steels after welding and depends on the alloy and cooling. If you further process or harden the steel afterwards, you need to know that retained austenite makes the structure softer and only transforms during a later heat treatment. So adjust the cooling rate and heat treatment to the material, otherwise you'll get an uncontrolled structure with cracks. If you're unsure, let the steel anneal properly before and after welding, then you'll have no surprises.
