Retained Austenite Content
The fraction of face-centered cubic microstructure that remains unchanged within the matrix after complete quenching below the martensite start temperature. A high content can impair the dimensional stability of the component.
After welding and rapid cooling, sometimes austenite remains in the structure that hasn't transformed into martensite. This is called retained austenite. It makes the material softer and can lead to distortion or cracks. To get this under control, you need to post-weld heat treat the weld seam specifically. That means keeping the seam warm enough so the structure can fully transform. Clean, uniform post-heating is key.
