Residual Gas Content
The amount of dissolved gases such as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen present in the solid metal, which critically determines toughness and crack resistance.
Dissolved gases, especially hydrogen, are undesirable in the weld metal. If the melt cools too quickly, the gas is trapped in the solidified structure and can lead to pores or cracks. Make sure the material is clean and dry, then you'll have less trouble with such defects. For critical steels, it helps to control the cooling so the gas can still escape before the structure solidifies.
