Retained Austenite
Retained austenite is the fraction of high-temperature phase that is not transformed into martensite or bainite and impairs dimensional stability.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
After quenching, part of the metal stays in a state that is not transformed into martensite or bainite. This portion is called retained austenite.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Retained austenite can hurt the mechanical properties, especially strength and toughness. That raises the susceptibility to cracks and distortion.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To minimize retained austenite, correct cooling is decisive. That includes using shielding gas like argon or covering the joint until it has cooled completely. Cooling too fast can create retained austenite, cooling too slowly reduces it.
