Residual Melt Solidification Interval

The residual melt solidification range is the temperature range between the point where the material is completely liquid (liquidus) and the point where it is fully solid (solidus). A narrow range leads to rapid solidification without hot cracking.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The residual melt solidification range is the area between liquidus and solidus where liquid and solid material mix. A narrow range means the material solidifies quickly from liquid to solid.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A wide residual melt solidification range can cause hot cracking because the material cools slowly and builds up stress. A narrow range promotes fast solidification without cracks.

Shop Practice & Action Guidelines

To ensure fast solidification, cooling of the material should be managed so it stays within the narrow residual melt solidification range. This can be done by controlled cooling or by choosing materials with a narrow range.
