Residual Stress Relief
The reduction of internal stresses through thermal treatments in the subcritical range where microplastic flow processes occur. This increases component stability for subsequent machining operations.
You do stress-relief annealing to remove the internal stresses that arise from welding or cooling. The workpiece is heated below the transformation temperature and slowly cooled again. If you skip it, the part can distort or even crack after machining, especially with thicker components or if you're going to machine it afterwards. The exact temperature and holding time depend on the material and wall thickness; if in doubt, look it up or ask the foreman.
