Residual stress state via phase transformation

Residual stresses result from volume changes during phase transformations in the metal. These can lead to mechanical problems, such as cracks or distortions.

Physical and chemical mechanism

During the phase transformation, the crystal lattice of the metal changes. This causes volume changes that create mechanical stresses in the material.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

These residual stresses can lead to cracking or distortion, especially if they are not properly balanced. In the weld zone, this can result in failed parts or a reduced service life of the material.

Workshop practice & action items

To minimize residual stresses, careful control of the welding parameters is essential. This includes proper selection of the welding process, adherence to correct temperatures and times, and applying stress-relief methods after welding.
