Backstep Welding Technique

Back-step technique is a welding sequence where the sub-sections are welded against the overall direction of progress. This reduces residual stresses and distortion through local heat input.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

The step-back technique prevents the weld area from heating up too quickly. This results in less distortion and keeps stresses in the material lower.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

With normal travel direction, localized heat input can lead to high stresses, causing distortion and potential cracking. The step-back technique prevents these issues through controlled heat input.

Workshop practice & instructions

Use the step-back technique on complex welding jobs where distortion is a risk. Start welding at the end and work toward the beginning. Keep the heat input constant and ensure uniform cooling.
