Friction Stir Channel Welding
A specialized application of friction stir welding for the hermetic sealing of internal cooling channels in solid plates. It prevents leaks in thermally highly stressed heat exchangers.
In friction stir welding, the heat is generated purely by mechanical friction – the material is not melted, but the pin kneads it in the plastic state. This results in a fine-grained, very strong and dense joint, which is well suited for butt and lap welds. You have to clamp the parts properly and choose the right speed and feed rate, then it runs stable. If the parameters are not correct, you often only see it in the cross-section or when tearing the specimen – pores and lack of mixing are the result.
