Friction Stir Welding Pin

A friction stir welding pin is a profiled pin that rotates during welding and mixes the material through plastic deformation.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The friction stir welding pin mixes the metal through mechanical deformation. As it rotates, it presses into the joint zone and reshapes the material, leading to a homogeneous connection.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

A missing or defective pin can lead to uneven deformation, which causes porosity and reduces the mechanical properties of the weld. Too high a rotation speed can overstress the material and cause cracks or fusion in the workpiece.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Make sure the pin is properly mounted and the tool rotation speed is set. A typical speed is 100-200 rpm. Monitor the material deformation and adjust settings if needed.
