Force-Controlled Friction Stir Welding

Friction stir welding with axial force control dynamically regulates the vertical downforce during the welding process to compensate for dimensional deviations and thermal gradients, ensuring consistent quality.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

During the welding process, the vertical clamping force of the rotating pin tool is continuously adjusted to keep the stress between the materials being joined constant. This minimizes stress differences and prevents local overheating or cooling.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Without force control, uneven stresses can lead to cracking. Dynamic control improves root security and prevents porosity through uniform cooling.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use the pin tool with force control activated. Set the clamping force to the specified value (e.g., 20 N/cm²) and ensure continuous monitoring of the process. If values deviate from normal (±5%), check the tool and correct as needed.
