Rutile Metal-Cored Wire
Rutile metal-cored wire consists of a tubular filler wire with a rutile-based powder filling. It enables high welding speeds and a stable arc.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Rutile metal-cored wire consists of a tubular filler metal tube filled with powder. This powder contains rutile (titanium dioxide), which acts as a strong deoxidizer and stabilizes the weld pool. High temperature and pressure during welding dissolve the powder into the molten metal, where it actively works.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Using rutile metal-cored wire produces a stable arc and increases travel speeds. This can, however, lead to faster cooling of the weld, which may result in a hard microstructure and potential cracking. Therefore, careful control of cooling time and temperature is important.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use rutile metal-cored wire for high-speed welding jobs. Make sure the cooling time after welding is at least 10 seconds to ensure adequate cooling and safe microstructure formation. Continuously monitor the arc and adjust the speed accordingly.
