Nitric Acid Passivation

An oxidative post-treatment process where metallically clean surfaces are forced by nitric acid application to rapidly form a dense, protective chromium oxide passive layer. This minimizes susceptibility to pitting corrosion.

Nitric acid eats at the surface and forms a dense chromium oxide layer – that's passivation. It protects the steel from corrosion and pitting. If you leave the acid on too long or it's too strong, it can attack the material and ruin the surface. Use a diluted acid, apply it evenly, and rinse it off thoroughly with water after the dwell time until everything is neutral. Then let it dry and you're done.
