Salt Spray Test

Salt spray test: test specimens are exposed to a continuous mist of sodium chloride solution to test their corrosion resistance.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

The salt spray test simulates a corrosive environment like seawater or other salty solutions. The sodium chloride solution reacts with the metal, causing corrosion.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This test reveals how susceptible coatings and materials are to salt corrosion. Missing or poor coatings can break down quickly, leading to corrosion susceptibility.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

The test is carried out in a special chamber with controlled temperature and humidity. Test duration varies depending on requirements, but it's common to choose at least 24 hours. After the test, the metal is thoroughly cleaned and inspected.
