Satellite Formation in Powder

Satelliting in powder: small particles stick to larger powder grains during atomization, which negatively affects flowability and powder layer density.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

During the atomization process in the production of shielding gases or other metal powders, smaller particles can attach to larger powder grains. This process is called satellite formation.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Satellite formation can lead to uneven powder layers, which reduces the flowability of the powder. This can cause problems in the build process, such as layers that are too thick or too thin, and leads to poor gas distribution. This increases the risk of porosity and reduces the quality of the machined surface.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To minimize satellite formation, control the atomization rate. Too high a rate can prevent smaller particles from attaching properly. Also, ensure clean powder preparation and avoid unnecessary contamination. When selecting the atomizer, make sure it suits the specific application.
