Oxygen Inclusions
Oxygen inclusions are non-metallic oxides that remain in the material and promote cracking. They lower dynamic strength.
Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Oxygen inclusions form from oxygen uptake during melting or cooling. These oxides remain in the metal and can act as notch points for cracks.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Oxygen inclusions reduce dynamic strength, impairing the material's resistance under mechanical load. They can also act as hard spots and promote cracking, especially at high temperatures or during rapid cooling.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To minimize oxygen inclusions, ensure a clean melting environment and controlled cooling. Use deoxidizers like silicon or titanium in the molten weld pool. Aim for slow and uniform cooling of the weld to avoid inclusion formation.
