Oxygen shielding gas component
Oxygen shielding gas reduces surface tension and promotes fine-droplet transfer in MAG welding, leading to a more uniform penetration.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Oxygen shielding gas reduces the surface tension of the droplet through chemical reactions. This prevents the droplet from forming a large ball and allows a fine-droplet transfer.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
A fine-droplet transfer leads to more uniform heat transfer and a more stable penetration, improving weld quality. Without oxygen shielding gas, uneven penetration and porosity can occur.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use small amounts of oxygen shielding gas (about 1-2 %) in the shielding gas mixture for MAG welding. Make sure the gas amount is not too high, as too much oxygen can increase the reactivity of the steel.
