Oxygen-Affinic Welding Consumable
Oxygen-affine filler material binds oxygen from the melt, preventing porosity and oxide bands, especially with reactive metals.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
An oxygen-affine addition reacts with the oxygen in the molten pool. This reaction forms a chemical bond between the addition and the oxygen, so the oxygen can no longer contribute to porosity or oxidation.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Without an oxygen-affine addition, reactive metals like steel or nickel can develop oxygen bands and pores. This leads to poor strength and toughness of the weld. A missing or insufficient addition can therefore lead to cracks and distortion in the structure.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
Use oxygen-affine additions like silicon, titanium, or zinc in the molten pool. The addition should be at least 0.1 % and vary depending on the metal type and process. Monitor the temperature and the addition content closely to ensure optimal binding of oxygen.
