Oxygen affinity
Oxygen affinity describes how strongly a metal absorbs oxygen. High affinity requires shielding gas during welding to prevent corrosion.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Oxygen affinity is the tendency of metals to bind oxygen. Elements like titanium and aluminum have high affinity and react quickly with oxygen in the air.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
With high oxygen content, the metal can corrode or become crack-sensitive. This leads to a weakened weld and reduces the component's service life.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
Use shielding gas like argon when welding titanium or aluminum. Keep the oxygen content below 1 % to avoid corrosion. Regularly check the gas supply and the shielding gas atmosphere.
