Oxygen binding by magnesium

Magnesium binds oxygen and sulfur in the weld pool, which prevents porosity and makes the structure cleaner. Too much of it, however, makes the material brittle and can cause problems during welding. So you have to dose the addition, then you get a clean, dense weld metal.
