Miner's Rule Damage Sum

Miner's sum is a measure of the total damage to a component under service loads. It reaches a value of one when the linear consumption of load cycles is summed.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Miner's damage sum is based on the cumulative consumption of components under repeated loads. Each time a part carries a load, a smaller damage occurs. The sum of these small damages gives the total damage sum.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

A too high value of Miner's damage sum indicates that the component will fail prematurely under the given loads. This can lead to cracks, fractures, or other defects that impair the safety and service life of the component.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To minimize Miner's damage sum, it is important that the loads are correctly distributed and the component is made of a material with sufficient strength. When selecting the material, the interactions between the loads and the material should also be considered. It is also advisable to carry out regular inspections to detect potential failures early and take measures to improve the service life of the component.
