Schaeffler Diagram

The Schaeffler diagram shows the microstructure in high-alloy welded joints, based on chromium and nickel content.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The Schaeffler diagram visualizes the formation of microstructure in high-alloy steels. It takes into account the content of chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni), as these elements strongly influence the microstructure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

The diagram helps in selecting the appropriate welding process to achieve specific microstructures. Incorrect values can lead to undesirable properties such as low toughness or increased risk of cracking.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Use the diagram to determine the chromium and nickel content in %. Mark the position on the diagram to predict the expected microstructure. Adjust the welding process accordingly, e.g., for high alloying to achieve a finer structure.
