Chilled Crust Formation

The rapid solidification of a fine-grained outer layer directly against the cold mold wall during the pouring of liquid metals. It significantly determines the initial surface quality of the casting.

Skin formation occurs when the molten metal solidifies too early on a too cold mold or chill wall. The outer skin then doesn't bond properly with the core, resulting in poor surface and can lead to cracks or defects. Make sure the mold or chill is well preheated before pouring and the temperature is right. Don't pour hesitantly; let the metal run in quickly and evenly, then the melt stays liquid longer and skin can't form. If you have the parameters under control, the casting stays clean and sound.
