Shadow Testing
Shadow testing is a qualitative radiographic analysis where irregularities or foreign objects in cavities are made visible by shadowing on a fluorescent screen. It is used for quick preliminary assessment.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Shadow testing uses X-rays or gamma radiation that passes through the material and is imaged on a fluorescent screen. Irregularities in the material change the beam path and cause streaks or shadows on the image.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Shadow testing is especially important for checking weld quality, drill holes, and cavities. It can detect cracks, pores, distortions, or foreign bodies. Incorrect interpretation can lead to misunderstandings and let dangerous defects go unnoticed.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use high-quality radiation measuring devices with high resolution. Make sure the fluorescent screen is clear and free of interference. Carry out the test in a safe environment and pay attention to protective measures for personnel.
