Radiographic Projection Shadowing
Shadow projection radiography is an NDT method that uses geometric projection of X-rays onto a detector to image components and internal defects. It enables analysis of the spatial extent of flaws.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
X-rays are shot through the part and are blocked at spots where defects or material changes are present. The blocked rays form shadows on a detector, which are then displayed as an image.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
This method is especially useful for checking weld quality and internal defects in parts. Wrong settings or poor control of the radiation spectrum can lead to inaccurate images, which can make it harder to spot defects.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use a high-resolution detector screen and make sure the X-ray source is properly aligned. The radiation spectrum should be set so it penetrates the desired depth and density of the part. When evaluating, watch for sharp shadow lines and irregular changes in the image.
