Coating Thickness Measurement

Coating thickness measurement is a method for determining the thickness of layers on metal or other materials. It is used for quality assurance to ensure that protective coatings meet required corrosion protection and barrier standards.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Coating thickness measurement captures the thickness of layers on material surfaces. This can be done with various methods, like ultrasound, X-ray or optical microscopy. The choice of method depends on the coating type and the material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Wrong coating thicknesses can lead to corrosion, contamination or other quality problems. A too-thin coating gives insufficient protection, while a too-thick coating causes unnecessary costs and can create mechanical problems.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use suitable measuring devices like ultrasound units or optical microscopes. Make sure the device is correctly calibrated and the coating is in the right condition (e.g. wet or dry). Note the exact thickness and compare it with the specified standards.
