Eddy current coating thickness measurement
The eddy current method measures coating thickness on metal via electromagnetic induction. The probe emits a signal tone that correlates with the distance to the surface.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
The eddy current method uses the induction properties of metals. An electric field creates an eddy current in the coating, which in turn causes an impedance change at the probe. This change is interpreted as a signal and correlates with the distance to the surface.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
The measurement is especially important for checking coatings like separating layers or protective layers. Wrong settings can lead to inaccurate measurements, which causes misunderstandings in material selection and treatment.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use the probe parallel to the surface and move it slowly along. The display gives the distance in millimeters. Pay attention to a clean surface, since dust or contamination can hurt the measurement.
