Interlayer Porosity
Layer boundary porosity results from insufficient energy when joining build layers, leading to open pores at the interfaces.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Layer-boundary porosity forms when the local energy during welding or joining of build layers is insufficient. This causes pores at the interfaces between layers to not fully close.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
This porosity can lead to cracks and deformation in the material, as open pores act as weak points. It also reduces weld strength and can lead to poor scale resistance.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
To avoid layer-boundary porosity, it is important to ensure sufficient energy during welding. This can be achieved by optimizing welding parameters, such as higher voltage or longer heat duration. Also make sure the build layers are clean and dry to minimize pore formation.
