Slag Former
Slag formers are components of electrode coatings and fluxes that form a protective, covering, and cleaning layer over the melt when melted. They prevent corrosion and improve the microstructure.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Slag formers are chemical additives that are converted into a liquid slag when melted. This slag forms a dense layer over the molten metal and prevents contact with air and other environmental substances. They react to oxygen and other chemical stimuli, resulting in a protective and cleaning effect.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Slag formers help prevent corrosion and improve the quality of the structure through controlled cooling. Without slag formers, the melt can be susceptible to oxidation and other chemical reactions, leading to porosity and reduced mechanical properties. A missing or insufficient use of slag formers increases the risk of corrosion and quality problems in the weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Make sure that electrode coatings and welding fluxes are correctly manufactured and contain slag formers. Check the content of slag formers in the materials regularly. If slag formers are missing or insufficient, the quality of the weld can be compromised, leading to porosity and reduced mechanical properties.
