Impact toughness testing
The impact toughness test measures how often a specimen can be loaded under constant pressure before it breaks. A notched steel strip is tested under a fixed stress range.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The impact toughness test uses a notched specimen that is loaded repeatedly. The number of cycles to failure measures the hardness and fracture resistance of the material under rapid loading.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
This test is especially important for highly stressed parts, such as aircraft components or machine shafts. A too low impact count can indicate too hard or non-uniform hardness, leading to cracks and failure.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
For the test, a special device is used that can measure the load and number of cycles. The specimen must be loaded within a fixed stress range between 0.2 and 0.8 of the ultimate tensile strength (UTS). The results should be compared with the specific requirements of the material.
