Melt Pool Oscillation

Periodic shape changes of the liquid melt pool under the influence of high energy densities and recoil forces of metal vapor. They affect the surface roughness of the resulting bead.

The molten pool wobbles when the metal vapor generated during welding presses from below against the liquid melt. This periodically deforms the pool, directly affecting the weld surface. If the pool oscillates too strongly, the weld becomes uneven and rough. This can make the weld porous and increase the risk of cracks because the structure doesn't solidify cleanly. You have to keep the molten pool calm and stable. Don't set the energy too high and adjust the welding speed so the vapor doesn't press so hard. A calm pool gives you a clean, dense weld.
