Melt Pool Oscillation Analysis
The optical or thermographic monitoring of melt pool geometry for the early detection of process instabilities and keyhole effects in the LPBF process.
Melt pool monitoring in LPBF is basically like welding: you watch the pool to see if the process is stable. With cameras or thermography, you look at the movements and shape changes of the pool. If the pool starts flickering or becomes restless, it can indicate problems like keyhole pores or unstable melt. You don't have to evaluate the data in real time, but you should keep an eye on trends. If you see an anomaly, the first step is to adjust process parameters—like laser power or scan speed. The exact values depend on your material and machine; trial and error and experience help. The goal is always a calm, even melt pool, then the weld will be clean.
