Weld Pool Reaction Gas
Melt pool reaction gas is a deliberately dosed gas addition that reacts with the molten pool. For example, nitrogen provides sufficient oxidation and improves the mechanical properties of the steel.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
The weld pool reaction gas, such as nitrogen (N₂), reacts with the metals in the molten pool. It removes oxygen and prevents porosity. This leads to controlled oxidation of the steel.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Wrong selection or dosage of the reaction gas can lead to unwanted phenomena such as over-oxidation or under-oxidation. This negatively affects the mechanical and corrosion properties of the steel.
Workshop practice & action instructions
Use the specific reaction gas at the prescribed concentration. For austenitic steels, a nitrogen content of 0.1 % to 0.2 % is common. Regularly check the gas supply and oxygen content in the melt.
