Weld pool viscosity

Melt pool viscosity indicates how fluid the metal is in the melting zone. It affects the flowability and behavior of the material during welding.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Melt pool viscosity is a measure of how thick or fluid the molten metal is. It depends on the chemical composition and the local temperature in the melt pool. Low viscosity means the metal flows well and moves easily; high viscosity creates more resistance to flow.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Viscosity that's too high can cause problems like porosity and poor penetration in the weld. The metal flows slower, leading to uneven bead shapes and possible cracking. Viscosity that's too low increases the risk of hot cracking and can alter the structure.

Shop Practice & How-To

To keep melt pool viscosity in the right range, control the chemical composition of the metal and the temperature in the melt pool. For high-carbon steels or with special additions like silicon, watch the viscosity range. A viscosity measuring device can help you dial in and adjust the values precisely.
