Meltrack Instability
The breakup of the continuous melt track into discrete droplets due to surface tension forces under unfavorable process parameters (balling effect). This leads to macroscopic pores and uneven layer surfaces.
When the melt trail becomes unstable, it tears open and forms individual droplets. This happens when the parameters don't match and surface tension tears the pool apart. This gives you porosity and an uneven, weak seam that is prone to cracking. Make sure the melt pool runs calm and even. If the trail starts to 'bead', you need to adjust speed or heat input. Clean shielding gas is important to keep oxygen away from the melt and prevent the surface from slagging.
