Cutting assist gases
Cutting gases are gases supplied during thermal cutting to remove the melt and prevent oxidation. Their composition affects cut quality.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Cutting gases such as argon or carbon dioxide are supplied during thermal cutting to expel the molten material and prevent oxidation. They protect the cut edges from corrosion and promote energy discharge.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Insufficient or incorrect selection of the cutting gas type can lead to poor cut quality, such as lack of melt expulsion or oxidation cracks. It also increases susceptibility to hot cracking and alters the material's structure.
Shop Practice & Procedures
Use argon for stiff metals like steel to ensure clean melting and low oxidation. For soft metals like aluminum, carbon dioxide is better. Pay attention to the correct gas pressure and flow rate as specified in the equipment manual.
