Cut Surface Perpendicularity

Cut surface squareness is the deviation of the cut edge from the ideal perpendicular to the workpiece surface due to uneven energy distribution during cutting.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Squareness of the cut face results from uneven energy distribution during cutting. This causes the cut edge to not be perfectly perpendicular to the workpiece surface.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Poor cut face squareness can lead to uneven stresses and cracks in the weld. It increases susceptibility to hot cracking and reduces joint strength.

Workshop Practice & Action Points

To ensure good cut face squareness, pay attention to:

• Properly set cutting angles

• Even energy distribution of the laser or electrode

• Regular maintenance and calibration of the cutting machine

• Use of high-quality tools
