Kerf Parallelism
Kerf parallelism is the geometric accuracy of the opposite cut faces across the entire sheet thickness. An uneven distance can lead to stresses and errors.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The parallelism of the cut surfaces determines how evenly stresses are distributed across the entire sheet. Uneven spacing can lead to localized stress areas that can cause cracks or deformation.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
A lack of cut gap parallelism can lead to stress concentration and thus to defects such as cracks or deformation of the weld. This can impair the strength and mechanical behavior of the overall system.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Make sure the cut surfaces are parallel by aligning the sheets precisely and checking them if necessary with aids such as screwdrivers or stress gauges. A deviation of at most 0.1 mm per meter of sheet thickness is acceptable.
