Kerf width

Kerf width is the width of the gap created during cutting. It depends on tool power, focus, and energy. Too wide a kerf causes material loss and poor heat exchange.

Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The cut width results from the interaction between the tool and the material. It is determined by the tool's power, focus size, and energy input.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

An overly large cut width leads to high material loss and can cause uneven heat distribution in the material. This can lead to uneven stresses and potential cracks.

Shop Practice & Action Instructions

To achieve an optimal cut width, carefully adjust the tool's power and focus size. The energy input should be selected so that the cut width is between 0.1 mm and 0.3 mm. If the width exceeds 0.5 mm, check the tool's power output.
