Kerf taper

Kerf taper is the deviation of the kerf width from the top to the bottom of the workpiece. It occurs due to energy loss as the beam passes through.

Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The cut taper occurs when the laser beam loses energy as it passes through the material. This causes uneven material expansion toward the beam entry point, making the cut width differ from top to bottom.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

High cut taper can cause uneven stress distribution and thus lead to cracks or deformations. It also weakens the weld, as the material isn't processed uniformly.

Shop Practice & Action Instructions

To minimize cut taper, adjust the laser's energy settings for even distribution across the material. High taper can be caused by excessive energy or a too short focal spot diameter.
