Cut edge micro-crack tendency
The statistical probability of microscopic crack formation due to thermal residual stresses at the cut edge. It depends heavily on the carbon equivalence of the metal.
Microcracks at the cut edge occur due to thermal stresses when the material cools too quickly after cutting or deforms unevenly. Depending on the carbon content and alloy, the material is more or less susceptible to this. During welding, these cracks can then lead to hot cracks or distortion, especially in higher-carbon steels. To prevent this, you need to ensure that the part doesn't cool down too quickly after cutting and that heat is applied more evenly during welding. For critical steels, it helps to preheat the material or control the cooling instead of just welding away.
