Step-Back Welding
Step welding procedure carries out the weld in small, uniform sections – ideal for complex components. Reduces distortion times and improves quality control.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Step welding interrupts the continuous welding process in short, uniform intervals. This allows more precise control of the welding parameters and prevents local overheating.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Step welding reduces the risk of distortion and hot cracking, since the local temperature does not rise as much. However, too rapid switching between steps can lead to incomplete fusion and result in missing weld spots.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use a fixed time for each step, e.g., 2 seconds per section. Make sure the weld pool is completely cooled before the next step begins. Monitor the temperature and the progress of the welding process continuously.
