Shrinkage Force Calculation
The calculation of the mechanical forces that arise from cooling of weld zones. These forces can lead to stresses and affect the structure.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Cooling of metals leads to volume reduction as the crystal lattice contracts. This process generates mechanical forces known as shrinkage forces.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Inadequate consideration of shrinkage force can lead to stress buildup and thus cracks or distortion in complex weldments. This can compromise structural integrity.
Shop Practice & Action Guidelines
To calculate shrinkage force, the following parameters must be considered: material type, weld thickness, cooling length, and cooling rate. For severe stress buildup, stress relief through mechanical methods or using stress-relieving tools may be necessary.
